Lane Restrictions


During the Newport Pell Bridge Deck Repair Project there will be restrictions

on Overwide and Overweight Vehicles and Permanent Lane Closures

  • Overweight Vehicle Restriction: ALL vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight OVER 80,000 pounds will be prohibited from crossing on the Newport Pell Bridge from May 15, 2017- December 22, 2017. 
  • Overwide Vehicle Restriction: ALL vehicles which have a Width EXCEEDING 8'6" will be prohibited from crossing on the Newport Pell Bridge from September 19-end of November, 2017. 
  • Lane Closures:  Traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction on the Newport side of the bridge, both east and west bound 24 hours a day from May 30-June 29, 2017 and September 19-end of November, 2017.  Other lane closures may be instituted throughout the entire duration of the project from May 15-December 22, 2017.  The Eastbound Open Road Tolling Lane (ORT) will be closed 24 hours a day from September 19-end of November, 2017. There will be NO Lane Closures on Labor Day weekend.
  • Traffic: We expect there to be delays during both the morning and evening rush hours. (6:00am - 10:00am and 3:00pm - 6:00pm)

 

All commercial vehicles weighing over 26,000 lbs must use RIGHT HAND LANE and go through the Toll Plaza (Not Open Road Tolling) on the Newport Pell Bridge.

Claiborne Pell Bridge - 

Construction and repair projects will continue through the end of December 2017. Traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction on the Newport side of the bridge, both east and west bound 24 hours a day from September 19-end of November, 2017.  Other lane closures may be instituted throughout the entire duration of the project from May 15-December 22, 2017.  The Eastbound Open Road Tolling Lane (ORT) will be closed 24 hours a day from September 19 - end of November, 2017. There will be NO Lane Closures on Labor Day weekend.

 

Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge -

Current projects may necessitate lane closures on the bridge.

A joint repair and pavement project to the North Kingstown approach originally scheduled to begin on October 23rd has been rescheduled to start on October 29th and continue to November 9, 2017. During the day, a modified traffic pattern of narrow lanes will be implemented and during night work from 8 p.m.to 5 a.m. lane closures will be in place just prior to getting on the Bridge.

 

Rt 138 Connector - 

There is currently no work on the Rt 138 connector.

 

Mt. Hope Bridge - 

Current projects may necessitate lane closures on the bridge.

A slab replacement project to the north approach (Bristol side) of the Bridge will begin on October 10th and continue to October 24, 2017.  The work will take place in the evening from 8 p.m. – 5 a.m.  and will require single lane travel with a police detail controlling alternating northbound and southbound travel. There will also be intermittent stops of 5-10 minutes.

 

Sakonnet River Bridge- 

There is currently no work on the bridge.

On March 20, 2017, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation will begin demolition of the former Sakonnet River Bridge which will affect traffic on the new Sakonnet River Bridge.
